The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office's Annapolis Harbor buoy reports real-time water quality and weather observations via wireless technology.
Annapolis Harbor Buoy meteorological data also can be viewed with any cell phone that supports web browsing at: chesapeakebay.noaa.gov/ahm.aspx.
Archives of this data are available in netCDF format.
Other buoys are distributed around the Bay as a part of the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System (CBIBS) to collect and deliver real-time meteorological, physical, water quality, water level, chemical, and biological data, as well as environmental, geographic, and historical information. These buoys support community education and classroom activities as a part of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.
A number of organizations and companies have contributed to the Annapolis buoy project:
- Bill Boicourt, University of Maryland Horn Point Laboratory, made the buoy platform available.
- WetLabs Corporation of Philomath, Oregon, supplied a water quality monitoring instrument.
- Weatherflow provided meteorological instrumentation.
- Annapolis Wireless provided WiFi connectivity to the buoy.
- The City of Annapolis Harbormaster's Office provided access to an Annapolis Harbor mooring.
- Severn Sailing Association hosts a radio receiver for meteorological data.
We welcome comments and suggestions for ways to improve the content and
delivery of the information provided by this buoy.
