The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO) was established in 1992 to provide a focus for NOAA’s multiple capabilities and activities in the Chesapeake Bay and with the multi-state/Federal partnership that comprises the Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) , which is administered by the EPA. The main NCBO office is co-located with the CBP in Annapolis, Maryland, and its staff coordinate and collaborate with CBP partners on a daily basis. NOAA has been a federal partner of the Chesapeake Bay Program since the signing of an memorandum of agreement with EPA in 1984.

NCBO represents all NOAA line offices, including National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research(OAR), the National Ocean Service (NOS), the National Weather Service (NWS), and the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). It also provides a clear focal point within NOAA for Chesapeake Bay initiatives, involves all relevant NOAA entities in Bay restoration efforts, manages peer-reviewed NCBO-funded research, and strengthens NOAA’s interactions with Chesapeake Bay partners.

NCBO has offices within Maryland and Virginia to better coordinate with constituents and partners. In Maryland our offices are located in Annapolis and Oxford. In Virginia, we are located in Norfolk and Gloucester Point. Our staff focus on work ranging from stock assessment and other fisheries management-related activities, ecosystem-based fisheries management,habitat restoration activities, fish passage, atmospheric deposition, remote sensing, GIS and data analysis,education, outreach, and information management systems.

Maryland, Annapolis

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office is headquartered on the Annapolis, Maryland, waterfront, close to the Chesapeake Bay Program. This location enables access to many Bay constituencies and encourages close collaboration with other federal agencies and partners. The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office’s Fisheries, Habitat, Coastal Observations, and Education efforts are coordinated through this office.

Oxford

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office runs a fisheries and habitat research and modeling program at the Cooperative Oxford Laboratory on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Here scientists investigate the health problems of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic life in the Chesapeake Bay. Oxford researchers collaborate with scientists nationally and internationally to improve the understanding of aquatic animal health and to develop ecosystem-based management strategies to prevent and mitigate diseases in fish and shellfish.

Virginia, Norfolk

Since 2003, the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office has maintained an office at Nauticus, the National Maritime Center, located on the busy waterfront in Norfolk, Virginia. At Nauticus, the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office is incorporating Chesapeake Bay information into existing Nauticus programs, creating new teacher training and student education programs, building new Chesapeake Bay-related exhibits, and developing a lecture series on NOAA-related topics. NOAA at Nauticus also houses a NOAA Education Resource Center, where educators can gather information and materials to use in educational activities with their students.

Gloucester Point

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office established an office in Gloucester Point, Virginia, at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), School of Marine Science, College of William and Mary, in 2004. This location enables the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office to interact with local and state science and management agencies, as well as nonprofits and local communities, on lower Chesapeake Bay issues including fisheries management and habitat.
