Since 1985, NOAA has provided funding support for Chesapeake Bay fisheries stock
assessments, monitoring, modeling, and related research. Results from the
NCBO-sponsored research program respond to current fishery management issues.
Each year, the NCBO-sponsored
Chesapeake Bay Integrated Research Symposium provides a forum for discussion
among world-renowned fisheries managers, scientists, and Congressional representatives.
This Symposium is an opportunity to showcase the numerous research activities being
funded through the program.
NCBO-supported research focuses on critical issues facing the Bay. For example,
Maryland and Virginia are considering introducing an Asian oyster into Chesapeake
Bay to increase oyster production and commercial harvest opportunities. NCBO
initiated a competitive research program in fiscal year 2004 designed to address
many questions that will help evaluate the costs and benefits of the proposed
action and the alternatives.
