Watermen Classroom

NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office partners with the Maryland Watermen's Association to provide Maryland teachers with the opportunity to have a local watermen present on a variety of topics, including:

  • Natural History
  • Cultural History
  • Economics
  • Gear Techniques
  • Social Sciences

Here's what kids have to say:

"I liked it when you explained how to catch crabs with a crabpot. I also liked it when you passed around your equipment because now I know what a waterman uses in order to catch a fish or a crab. About how long does it take to catch a fish? Thank you Mr. John for informing us about what watermen do."

"Thanks a bunch for coming to visit. I thought the dead fish was cool, although some people thought differently. Also, I never knew you could make your own fish net (way cool!). But, one thing shuts down my brain, how many Blue Crabs are there in the Chesapeake Bay? Well, I guess I'll figure out next time. See ya soon!"

"Thank you for the pins and stuff. I really liked it. I learned from your presentation that watermen make everything that they put in the Bay. Thank you for spending time with us. I really appreciate it. P.S. - Your crab pits are cool and so are you!"
